How Coca-Cola Is Made

To make genuine Coca-Cola, one needs the famously secret concentrate - known as merchandise "7X" - which is a highly confidential formula kept in a special security vault in a bank in the United States. Only a few trusted company employees know its true contents, proper order and measure of mixing.

New and returned bottles are sorted into various sizes before being cleaned. They are washed in special detergents and thoroughly rinsed to ensure a sparkling, clean and sanitary bottle.

The bottles are then visually inspected to ensure that they are clean, not chipped and not cracked. Each bottle is then passed through an electronic inspection, searching for the tiniest speck of dirt – bottles that do not match up to the quality standard are rejected and destroyed.

Pure refined sugar is mixed with filtered drinkable water that is completely clear of foreign tastes or smells, to produce “simple syrup”, which is then filtered to remove impurities. This simple syrup is mixed with the secret concentrate, carefully controlling the strength to produce a syrup with the correct taste and concentration.

The final syrup is mixed with the treated water and the correct amount of carbon dioxide is added to the water, ensuring a gassy element to the final product. The clean bottle is filled and almost instantly the bottle passes to the capping machine. The filled bottles are then inspected again to ensure the product is filled correctly and that all caps or crowns fit properly and do not leak.

Finally, the bottles are collected and placed into crates. The Coca-Cola stock is rotated to ensure all products that leave the bottling plant are always fresh. The product is then dispatched to numerous outlets, where customers purchase Coca-Cola products in a variety of packages.

The Coca-Cola Company specifies that every bottling and canning plant in the world follow the specific mixing and filling instructions for Coca-Cola and its other products. The strict attention to quality control, as much as the refreshing flavour, has contributed to the success and continued growth of Coca-Cola and its allied brands. Quality is everything and the Parow Plant recently achieved outstanding results in the annual Quality Management Audit.
