New school library opens at Rahmaniyeh Primary School in District Six

Sat, Jun 01 2024

What happens when compassion, creativity, and corporate support meet? A storybook-worthy library rises in District Six, thanks in part to Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages.

On 6 March 2025, the Rahmaniyeh Primary School community in District Six will celebrate a major milestone in literacy and learning with the official opening of the Rahmah Library.

This new literacy hub is the result of a collaborative initiative led by the Rotary Club of Newlands, The MAAK, and the Otto Foundation, with generous support from partners including Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, Stonehage Fleming, the Kamvalethu Foundation, the MacFarlane Family Foundation, Corobrik, Biblionef South Africa, and family trusts.

The Rahmah Library aims to foster a deep love of reading and lifelong learning in the community. The facility offers more than just access to books—learners will benefit from a full-time librarian, structured library programming, and an exciting calendar of events such as author readings, storytelling, book quizzes, and reading relays.

Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages proudly supported the project, aligning with its ongoing commitment to creating meaningful change through education and community development across the Western Cape.

The Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, will attend the official opening and deliver a keynote address underscoring the City’s support for civil society initiatives that build a better future for local communities.

The library’s architectural design was handled by The MAAK, an award-winning spatial practice known for its social impact work. Clay from the historic site was incorporated into the building’s bricks—a symbolic tribute to the rich heritage of District Six.

Key features of the project include:

  1. A vibrant new library with curated collections and dynamic programming aimed at developing literacy in early learners.
  2. A dedicated outdoor learning space—created through a partnership with Mzansi Organics and SUGi—to encourage environmental awareness through nature-based education.
  3. A long-term sustainability commitment by the Otto Foundation, ensuring the library remains an active educational hub in the years to come.

The name “Rahmah,” derived from Arabic, translates to mercy, compassion, and kindness. It’s a fitting symbol for a space designed to nurture young minds and inspire curiosity, creativity, and care.
