Soup, sandwiches and spotless streets for Mandela Day IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

 17 July 2017

On Tuesday this week, South Africans from all walks of life will put their work aside, to commemorate the life of former President Nelson Mandela by spending 67 minutes doing something to help others less fortunate. This year the team at Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB) will celebrate Mandela Day by preparing thousands of sandwiches and hundreds of litres of soup to give to those in need.  The CCPB South region based in Athlone will prepare 1000 sandwiches, individually packed with an orange and apple each, for the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Heideveld, the Heatherdale Children’s Home in Belgravia, Ekuphumleni Frail Care Centre in Gugulethu and Baphumelele Foundation in Khayelitsha.

Another 1000 sandwiches and fruit packs will be handed to the Mustadafin Foundation for distribution to the various projects they co-ordinate among underprivileged communities in Mitchells Plain. Last year the CCPB team prepared 1700 sandwiches in 67 minutes. This year they will need to spread and slice even faster to meet their ambitious target of making 2000 sandwiches in the same amount of time. The Country team around Northern Cape will also set aside 67 minutes to provide nourishing food to those in need. In Worcester, cups of soup, sandwiches and cooldrinks will be served to approximately 800 patients attending the Worcester State Day Hospital as well as residents of Zolani informal settlement near Ashton. Pensioners living at the Vredendal Old Age Home and elderly people who attend the EJ Lombardi Service Centre in Hermanus will receive juice and a boerewors roll, while children at the Wielie Walie Creche in Springbok will have a smile on their face when they also receive boerewors rolls and juice from CCPB staff for a special lunch on Mandela Day.

CCPB North organised a raffle in the Parow, Vredenburg and Paarl offices to raise R5000 to purchase much-needed nappies, baby food and other essentials for three charities: Ubuntu, St Joseph’s and Rock A Bye in Kuils River. The teams will also spend 67 minutes at the charities helping out.  CCPB is also supporting celebrity chef and one of SA’s outstanding foodie personalities Jenny Morris, who will host a Soup Kitchen for Mandela Day at the Yumcious Café in Green Point. Together with over 100 volunteers, Morris plans to make hundreds of litres of soup for the homeless people in night shelters. CCPB will be keep the teams of people hydrated with soft drinks and water as they chop vegetables and bake muffins for Mandela Day. The sale of each muffin (at R20) will enable two people to stay in a warm shelter for a night.  And if you are still unsure about what to do for Mandela Day, why not join the #CleanYourHood campaign jointly championed by CCPB and The Cape Argus? Spend 67 minutes clearing rubbish and to clean up your neighbourhood.

Corporates are encouraged to “adopt a street” in a particularly disadvantaged area where litter remains a problem. Remember to take before and after photos to post on social media using the #CleanYourHood hashtag and your efforts could put you in line for a prize. “We encourage all our team to get involved in giving back to the communities where we operate. Mandela Day is just one day where we put our work aside for 67 minutes and think of those less fortunate than ourselves. Whether it is clearing rubbish from our streets to protect our environment and create safer communities, or preparing food, we can all be a force for good and make a difference in those 67 minutes,” says Priscilla Urquhart, Public Affairs and Communications Manager at CCPB.
